Prior to that, Evan was the CEO and COO of Uncommon Schools, during which time the organization’s performance earned the Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools for demonstrating the most outstanding student achievement in the country. Evan also is the Founder and former Co-Director of Roxbury Prep, an urban college preparatory public school that was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as one of eight of the highest-performing charter schools in the country. After founding Roxbury Prep, Evan served as Special Assistant to the Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning of the New York City Department of Education. Evan started his career as a middle school teacher and administrator and as Director of  Summerbridge Louisville, a non-profit academic enrichment program.

Education, Awards & Fellowships

Evan received his B.A. from Wesleyan University, his Ed.M. from Harvard University, and his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a senior editor of the Columbia Law Review. Evan is a former Pahara fellow and an alum of the Broad Superintendents Academy.

My Why

Evan graduated from a public high school on the south side of Chicago at a school where far too many students were left behind and where several teachers profoundly changed his life and helped steer him to a more positive path. Experiencing that paradox influenced Evan's decision to devote his career to K-12 education so that all students might one day have access to rigorous and joyful schools.

What Brings Me Joy

Outside of work, Evan checks his phone constantly in case his two adult children respond to his texts. He also tries to stay active and healthy despite a steady stream of older-age injuries.
