Education, Awards & Fellowships

John holds a B.A. from Carleton College, where he was a Posse Scholar. He is also a graduate of the Relay Graduate School of Education National Principals Academy Fellowship.

My Why

John’s commitment to ensuring that all children have access to education systems that support them and help them reach their full potential stems from his experiences growing up as a Latino public school student in Chicago, where he witnessed firsthand how the quality of a public school classroom is a powerful determinant of opportunity, especially for students of color. This belief in the power and potential of public education was further reinforced by John’s experience as a classroom teacher and school leader, where he was committed to building classrooms of joy and rigor that supported all students.

What Brings Me Joy

Outside of work, John enjoys immersing himself in new shows and books, spending time with his family, cooking, and powerlifting.
